The Weekly Gaffe: A+

[The Weekly Gaffe is a non-weekly series about french foibles.]

Overheard recently:

le Meg - You know, I really like Peter.

le mec - And why is that?

le Meg - The way he signs his emails; it's just great. When everyone else is full of "pas mal" and avoiding hyperbole...

le mec - Meg?

le Meg - ...he says "A+". I mean, it's almost transgressive. Top of the morning, nothing could be better...

le mec - Um, Meg?

le Meg - ...allright it's a little bit dorky, but...

le mec - Meg!!

le Meg - Yes?

le mec - See you later.

le Meg - Where are you going?

le mec - à plus tard.

le Meg - Well, then, when are you coming back?

le mec - à plus...A+...get it?

le Meg - Fine. Don't tell me. I'm not your mother, anyway.

I'm with you Meg. I refuse to "get it" because your reasoning is much mor Dalai Llama.

Joint the Club! Eight years in the U.S., and I still don't get the XOXOXO on postcards -- except that they mean well. What woud the Dalai Llama think?...

Hi !

Acually, the "A+" dates back to the earlier years of the Minitel: the 1980s.

It originated - allegedly - on the messageries roses. (grin)

Best,

Hah, this made me laugh! So true. I had a similar A+ experience with my ex-French. When he signed his emails like that I thought it just went with his whole dorky, wearing his pants too high persona - I'm feeling A+ today, not at all C- ...and all that.

I remember looking at records stores and trying for the life of me to figure out what K7 could possible mean.

Those clever French.
